Tweet Illustration by Michael Hogue Just before the Labor Day weekend, a front page New York Times story broke the news of the largest cheating scandal in Harvard University history, in which nearly half the students taking a Government course on the role of Congress had plagiarized or otherwise illegally collaborated on their final exam. In the last generation or two, the funnel of opportunity in American society has drastically narrowed, with a greater and greater proportion of our financial, media, business, and political elites being drawn from a relatively small number of our leading universities, together with their professional schools. Indeed, the early success of Facebook was largely due to the powerful imprimatur it enjoyed from its exclusive availability first only at Harvard and later restricted to just the Ivy League.

This is the fourth testing year for the current suite of the year 3, 4 and 5 optional tests.
It is not necessary to order reusable materials that may have been saved from last year. The tests are designed to help teachers raise standards through supporting and verifying their teacher assessment. By using these standard tests alongside existing teacher assessment practices, teachers can keep track of pupils' progress between the key stage 1 and key stage 2 national tests.
To support teachers in the marking of the tests the level thresholds and optional grids for test analysis for the tests are available on the menu to the left of this page. Results data is provided for the suite as well as for the present suite of optional tests for years 3, 4 and 5.

The optional tests were fully integrated with the present national curriculum and statutory testing protocols. The tests for all year groups are mapped to national curriculum level descriptions. English tests for years 7, 8 and 9: Designed for pupils working across levels 3 to 7 of the national curriculum for English, there are separate reading and writing tests for each year, plus two Shakespeare papers for year 9.
